Off The Air? Several Golden Knights Games In April Might Not Be On TV
Sitting back and watching Dave Goucher, Shane Hnidy and the rest of the Vegas Golden Knights broadcast team on AT&T Sportsnet may soon be a thing of the past.
Warner Bros Discovery, the media conglomerate behind the Knights television home, is warning the team (and others across the country) that they’ll be out of the regional sports network game soon. That’s according to a recent report from the Wall Street Journal and other sources.
The company is giving a March 31st deadline for the teams to sell the rights to their teams to another broadcaster. If they don’t do so by the deadline, that will mean the bill will come due for AT&T Sportsnet to pay for the rights, and that may force the company to file for Chapter 7 bankruptcy. According to Sports Business Journal, the company will allow teams and their new partners to continue using existing staff and equipment.
In the off chance they are unable to come to an agreement with a new television home, four Knights games may go untelevised locally:
- April 1st vs Minnesota Wild
- April 3rd at Minnesota Wild
- April 6th vs Los Angeles Kings
- April 11th vs Seattle Kraken
Games on April 4th, 8th and 13th are expected to be televised on ESPN and/or ABC and shouldn’t be affected by the network shutdown.
The Golden Knights are not alone in scrambling for a new TV partner…
In total, Warner Bros Discovery is looking to offload three different regional sports networks that carry 7 teams. They include the Vegas Golden Knights, Pittsburgh Penguins, Utah Jazz, Houston Rockets, Houston Astros, Pittsburgh Pirates and Colorado Rockies.
Operating a regional sports network has become less and less advantageous in recent years. Networks pay a pretty penny to carry local sports teams, which then pass that cost on to consumers who pay for that network on cable. But with more people cutting the cord, and fewer paying to watch the network, some like Bally Sports have already gone on to declare bankruptcy.
Why not everything will change for the Golden Knights…
Thankfully many of the familiar faces you know and love are employees of the team, not the network. So Dave, Shane, Ashali, Daren, Gary and others should remain with whatever production does continue.
Where could they go next…
There could be a chance that we get access to Golden Knights games… over the air. Channel 13 is the official television station of the Vegas Golden Knights, who carry the team’s pre-season games. However their parent company, E.W. Scripps, has begun rumbling that they’d like to bring a national sports network, with locally customized programming. That would mean you can watch the Knights on cable again… and even over the air on free television.
Maybe the sports network-pocalypse isn’t so bad after all. Fingers crossed… and go Knights go!
