UNLV Unveils Rebel Recovery Program, Additional Safety Measures
December 6th is a day that will forever go down in history – the day of the UNLV shooting that claimed the lives of three UNLV faculty members. As we continue to mourn the losses of UNLV Professor, Jerry Cha-Jan Chang, Ph.D., UNLV Assistant Professor, Patricia Navarro Velez, Ph.D., and UNLV Associate Professor, Naoko Takemaru, Ph.D., the university has unveiled its plans to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all of it’s students, professors, and employees on campus. Included in this plan is the new ‘Rebel Recovery Program.’
Increased Safety Measures
The University of Nevada Las Vegas has implemented increased safety measures as one of the school’s top priorities heading into the spring semester. According to News 3, professional security teams are now present on campus “to aid the university police department in deterring crime and other malicious acts.” It’s so important that the school, and every school, have as much back up as possible. The more security and eyes on the day to day operations on campus, the better.
Rebel Recovery Program
Following the tragic events of December 6th, UNLV is prioritizing the mental health of all of those affected. How are they doing this? One of the top resources the university is offering is the UNLV Rebel Recovery Program. According to the official UNLV website, “Rebel Recovery will encompass special events, wellness services, training opportunities, security and safety issues, and more.” Included in the Rebel Recovery Program is the Recovery Coordinating Team and the Committee on Campus Security and Safety. These teams’ purposes are to support the implementation of numerous recovery efforts across multiple areas of safety and wellness, as well as examine existing security measures and protocols to then provide suggestions for enhancements.
