Californians Moving To Las Vegas At Slower Rate: Study
Everywhere you turn, you’ll see them. An invasion not seen since The Beatles took America. California license plates as far as the eye can see, and they aren’t visiting. Yes, there has been an influx of Californians moving to Las Vegas since COVID, but it appears as though the armada is slowing.
The UNLV Center for Business and Economic Research has been following the phenomenon for years. Back in 2020, the entire country was off-kilter due to the pandemic. That year, they estimate that just over 19,000 people came to Clark County from the Golden State that year.
But not all that glitters is “Gold”. The following year, moves to California increased by over 50 percent to just over 30,000 people crossing the border for good. With it came more traffic and higher home values due to increased demand.
Fewer Californians Moving To Las Vegas Due To Many Factors
Researchers have noticed a cooling of sorts since 2021. UNLV says that in 2022, Californians moving to Las Vegas and Clark County dropped by around 8 percent. The latest numbers in 2023 show a deeper chasm, with numbers dropping around 14 percent year to year down to 23,771. State wide the trend was much the same.
What did we do? Was it something we said? Was it the massive rage we feel when a BMW in a California license plate cuts you off on the 215? Was it stealing the Oakland Athletics? Turns out, Nevada might be the victim of its own success.
Californians Finding Other Locales To Move To
Nevada is nestled right up next to California, so it goes without saying that we would take a lot of fleeing Californians. The Census Bureau tracks people migrating from one state to another.
The latest numbers from 2022 show that California is still the number 1 state creating new Nevadans. But Californians are choosing several states above the Silver State.
Colorado, Oregon, Arizona and Washington State are the four states ranking higher, all on or near the West Coast. However the top 3 might surprise you.
You’d think the “west coast is the best coast” but hundreds of Californians are moving to Texas every day and is the number one destination of departing Californians. Tax free Florida was number 2. New York and its terrible winters ranked in third. Maybe they wanted all the taxation of California without the beautiful weather.
