When Your Kid Gets Hurt But Doesn’t Cry
Parenting can be challenging. It’s a constant battle of negotiation, joy, love, pain, agony and exhaustion. One of the things that can be the toughest is when your kid cries about the most insignificant little things.
Being a parent to two boys, I haven’t taught my kids that crying is bad. But both Colin and Mario know the saying: “It’s OK to cry, but don’t cry about silly things”. Mario, 3, will repeat that back to me while he is crying about a silly thing. But he knows the rule.
You start to figure out the cries that your kid has after a while. The fake “I wanted that but I can’t have that” whimper. The “I need a nap” cry. But sometimes, you know right away, that cry is legit.
I’ve seen the boys take some falls on our tile floor that have made my heart stop. Super scary. But they are tough kids and they are starting to handle the bumps and bruises a little better (and avoid them altogether).
Last night we were playing in the backyard (partially because everyone but me got COVID and while they are almost testing negative, I’m not playing that game yet). Mario and Colin were playing with this Little Tikes tennis thing, and both of them really have great form!
Unfortunately, what they don’t have is spatial awareness.
Mario stomped, waiting for the ball to pop up so he could give it a WHACK. Meanwhile Colin was aimlessly walking around, directly in the line of fire of his little brother’s mean backhand. Before I could spout out a syllable… click. Boom. SMACK. Mario hit this plastic ball right in Colin’s face.
“Oh boy,” I said. My wife asked “oh no honey, are you OK?!” Usually that question would garner water works… but last night it didn’t. Colin was obviously a bit hurt, but he dealt with it really well. Super proud of him!
