New Tesla Layoffs Are Nevada’s Second Largest Of The Year
Tesla has been in the news a lot lately, and not all of it good. Their latest sales numbers are in and they didn’t meet Wall Street’s expectations. So new Tesla layoffs are coming to offset the losses, and a great number of them are coming from right here in Nevada.
The company filed documents with the Nevada DETR (Department of Employment, Training And Rehabilitation) that said they are laying off 693 employees from the “Tesla Gigafactory” in Sparks just outside of Reno. This layoff would mark the second largest in the state so far in 2024, behind only the Tropicana closure. This is part of an expected 10 percent cut (at least) of employees across the board.
The Tesla Gigafactory is responsible for building nearly everything but the cars themselves. From the batteries to the electric motors, Powerwalls and more, it cranks out a lot of product. The only wheels that are rolling out of the facility are the Tesla Semitruck which is having an awfully slow launch it seems.
New Tesla Layoffs The Result Of Missing Q1 Numbers… Big
If you follow the Tesla stock at all, you know it’s been almost entirely up historically, until recently. The stock is up about 1100 percent in the last decade. While that is amazing, it used to be a lot better.
At the company’s peak in November 2021, the increase from April 2014 was nearly 3000 percent. But things started to get complicated for the company.
Supply chain issues led to expensive cars that were, albeit, still in demand. But the company couldn’t pump them out fast enough. Then demand for all electric vehicles seems to have slowed as the tipping point of electrification may not have reached a fever pitch yet. There’s also the issue of Elon Musk taking a hard turn to the right politically, which may have cost him at the dealership.
Tesla gave up huge incentives at the end of Q4 2023 including free supercharging for six months to goad potential buyers into pulling the trigger. But there is only so many price cuts and incentives a company can give. So at the end of Q1 2024, it was time to face the music.
Sadly, that has come in the form of new Tesla layoffs affecting hundreds in Northern Nevada. This after giving a healthy raise last year in order to stave off union talks.
