The Great Second Chance 5k; Lace Up Your Shoes
Living in Las Vegas you know how big community is for the people that live here. People on the outside just don’t see it but it’s here and it’s big! One of my favorite things every year is the Second Chance 5k in Summerlin.
Each spring for the past 8 years Second Chance gets everyone together to fight for those who need connection… those who are struggling or have struggled in the past with substance abuse and addiction. We want everyone to know you are not alone.
I joined the family in 2018 when a friend of mine told me about the 5k that she put together in honor of her little sister who had lost her battle to addiction. It’s a story of heartache and resilience. My friend decided to honor her sister by creating this event that would not only celebrate life but also provide second chances to those in need. The Second Chance 5k stands as a testament to the power of turning grief into action and giving back to the community in a meaningful way.
Did you know according to the American Addiction Center, 46.8 million Americans 12 years old and up battled a substance use disorder in the past year? Odds are you have dealt with it or know someone who has. Show up for that person in April.
Second Chance 5k is more than just a race it’s a symbol of hope and redemption. Runners/walkers come together to support a worthy cause and make a positive impact on our community. Whether you’re an avid runner or a leisurely walker, there’s a place for everyone in this inspiring event. You get a great shirt you get a beautiful medal and a sense of togetherness that will bring you to tears.
What makes the Second Chance 5k unique is its emphasis on second chances. It’s a reminder that no matter how dire the circumstances are, there’s always hope for a better tomorrow. Proceeds from the event go towards supporting local organizations that assist those in need, whether it’s through education, healthcare, or just basic necessities.
Please watch this clip below from last year’s 5k and tell me you don’t feel the power of togetherness.
