Be Aware: New Scam Claims To Be LVMPD
At this point, we’re all pretty familiar with the various scams that we need to be on the lookout for. Phone scams, social media scams — they’re everywhere.
But local Las Vegans are encouraged to be on the lookout for one special scam in particular, as the latest scam to hit our city is one posing to be the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.
LVMPD sent out the following in a press release: “The LVMPD has been made aware of a scam where callers claim to be a representative of the police department. These scammers are calling people around the valley and informing them they have an outstanding warrant. Victims are being told to meet at a location and pay the warrant with cash or gift cards, or being emailed a QR code that allows the scammer to be paid directly.”
It’s important to note that the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department does not issue warrants and would never contact an individual asking for payment over the phone or through a QR code.
What should you do if you receive the spam LVMPD scam call?
This scam is currently circulating around the Las Vegas valley, and a number of individuals are receiving the calls. You could be next. If you receive a spam call that sounds similar to the calls described above, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department says that they advise you to please hang up immediately. Don’t entertain the scam callers whatsoever.
Been a victim of other online or phone scams?
Unfortunately, these types of scams have grown to be very prevalent and common, claiming victims every single day. If you’ve found yourself in a similar situation and fallen victim to a phone or online scam, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department advises you to visit IC3.gov and file a report.
