Lies Our Parents Tell… And Lies We Tell Our Kids
Parenting isn’t easy. You have these kids that are absolutely hellbent on doing something you don’t want them doing. That’s where the little white lie can come to save the day.
All of our parents have lied to us here and there to put a little fear in us, and get us to change our ways. Many of us are now parents, and we use this to our advantage.
Aimee’s parents were sick and tired of the glare caused by the dome light inside the car while they drove, so they told her that the police would give them a ticket if she turned the light on. She believed it for years… and didn’t realize it was a lie until she told her own son to turn off the light in her car. Her grandfather also told her that he had a bullet in his shoulder. Why? Who knows.
Shawn’s mom was sick of watching him throw trash on the ground, so at a young age she told Shawn in dramatic fashion that the world would literally cease to be if one piece of trash too many were dropped on the ground. Would Shawn be the one to drop that last piece of trash? Shawn had this in his brain for years until eventually it dawned on him that…it was a big fat lie.
Now, as parents, Aimee+Shawn both use lying to their advantage!
Aimee had an issue with her eldest son not brushing his teeth, so she printed a tooth decay picture. There were words underneath it, but Jayden couldn’t read at the time. He asked what it said. It likely said something like “example of bad dental hygiene” but instead Aimee told him it said “picture of little boy who didn’t brush his teeth”. Wouldn’t you know it, he started brushing!
Then there are the lies that, if the kid uses their brain, they’ll know it’s nonsense. “I’ll turn this car around”. Pfft, please.
