Pain In The Gas: Nevada Paying Top Prices For Fuel Fill-Ups
The last few years haven’t been easy on the wallet, and while gas prices in other states may be higher, as a percentage of the paycheck, no state is more costly than Nevada.
According to data from HiRoad Car Insurance, Nevadans are spending 29.6% of their hourly salary on a gallon of gas, enough for first place on yet another list we’d rather not top. Idaho came in 2nd place with 27.3%, and California and Indiana tied for 3rd with 24.5% of hourly salary tied up in fueling.
It’s a reflection of not only the price of the gas, but the median household income in the state. While Nevada comes 27th on the list of median household income at just over $62,000 (according to World Population Review), other surrounding states fare better. The median household income in California is $78,672, Washington is at just over $77,000 and even Oregon ranks higher at $65,667 a year.
States with lower median household incomes, like Mississippi, West Virginia and Arkansas tend to boast less expensive gasoline due to their shorter distance from refineries. So while they earn less, they pay less at the pump.
Nevada gas prices are terrible… where can I save some money?
The place to live if you don’t want to dedicate a big part of your check to filling your tank? Massachusetts. In the Bay State, only 12.7% of the average hourly salary is spent on gas, despite Boston being widely lauded as the worst city for traffic in the country. It’s not that the gas is cheaper there, but the incomes are that much higher ($84,385).
Thankfully, we don’t spend the most per year refilling a vehicle. According to HiRoad’s research, Nevada pays $1747, or around $146 a month refilling our car. Wyoming on the other hand spends the most at $2233 a year, or $186 a month. The cheapest? Rhode Island at just $974 a year. It’s a tiny state.
Hey, it’s cheaper than eggs.
