Seven Magic Mountains Could End Up 7 Hours North
When we first saw Seven Magic Mountains in 2016, we didn’t know what to think of it. Artist Ugo Rondinone’s towers of painted boulders were like nothing we had ever seen. But over the years, we’ve fallen in love with the unique roadside attraction.
While the rocks were only scheduled to be south of the Las Vegas valley off of Interstate 15 for two years, the lease continues to get extended with the Bureau Of Land Management. Well, it appears as though time is running out.
Seven Magic Mountains Could Be Headed To Reno
The art installation, part of the Nevada Museum Of Art, is running out of runway. Ironically, the reason their lease is likely not to be renewed at their current location is due to the planned secondary airport that is coming to the area. Believe it or not 7 large stone towers and Boeings don’t mix. Heck, Boeing planes don’t seem to mix with anything nowadays.
So that’s it. Party is over… or is it? Turns out our smallest little neighbors to the north are interested in taking it off of our hands.
On Tuesday, the Washoe County Board Of Commissioners voted to hand a check to the Nevada Museum Of Art to move the mountains from the desert to the cooler climate of Reno (or the surrounding area). That is a move that could run half a million dollars according to 8 News Now.
Who Has The Final Decision?
This is, quite obviously, not OK. Who will put a stop to this madness? It turns out Seven Magic Mountains creator Ugo Rondinone. At the end of the day, he will get to decide where the installation will go, be it to Reno, another location in Clark County, or in a trash heap.
Seven Magic Mountains is one of those weird and funky things we love seeing on our drive to Southern California (and back). Here’s hoping they can find a way to make it work.
