Hot, Hot, Hot: Las Vegas Breaks Its Record For Most 100-Degree Days In A Year
Another 100-degree day on Wednesday meant Las Vegas broke its record for most 100-degree days in a year. It’s been a hot one!
I don’t want to hear any of that “it’s a dry heat” stuff. Heat is heat and being hot is being hot. There’s no fooling yourself on a 100-degree day, you can’t escape it or talk yourself out of it. Now, the city of Las Vegas has had more 100-degree days in 2024 than any other year. September 25th marked the 101st day this year where temperatures reached over 100 degrees.
Have There Been More 100-Degree Days In 2024 Than Ever Before?
Las Vegas is known for being hot. It is in a desert, after all. However, all of that heat doesn’t compare to what residents of Sin City have gone through this year. 101 days with temperatures over 100-degrees as of Wednesday and that number could still climb even higher! Temperatures are expected to reach 100 degrees every day through Monday! So, the city might not have just beaten the record, it might end up smashing it.
According to KTNV, the previous record was set in 1947 at 100. Las Vegas was a different place back in 1947. The population in the city was under 9,000 and The Strip was just starting to be established. Safe to say it looks nothing like it does today and wasn’t nearly as bright. It’s been a long time since the 40s and now that record has finally been broken–it took a long time!
It’s important to take care of yourself during high temperatures like this. Remember to always drink water constantly and limit your time outside in the sun- it can take its toll very quickly. It’s also important to remember that if you’re feeling the heat, your pets are too! Make sure they always have their water and make sure to limit their time outside as well. Their paws can be badly damaged on concrete during extreme heat. We have the luxury of wearing shoes while they do not. Take care of yourself and your loved ones during this record-breaking heat!
