Las Vegas Metro Officer In Altercation With Street Vendor
Walk around Las Vegas long enough, and you are bound to see them. Multi-colored umbrellas atop the cart of a street vendor selling something potentially delicious. The legality of these vendors all depend on whether they have a license to do so. That’s what caused an altercation between one street vendor and a Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department officer.
The event, shown partially through body camera, took place on August 6th. In the brief video, you hear the officer admonishing the vendor, asking for his license.
Officer: “Licencia now. I’m going to put your right in the handcuffs if you don’t listen.”
Vendor: (unintelligible)
Officer: “Huh? No that’s not how it works. You already pissed me off. You didn’t listen. Give me your licencia now.”
Vendor: “I showed you.”
Officer: “Give me your license. Not business. Driver’s license. I already said licencia.”
Vendor: (unintelligible, begins filming officer)
Officer: “Perfect, we’re gonna play those games? Perfect.”
The officer then proceeds to tell the vendor to put his hands on the small of his back, but did not tell him he was arrested. The vendor turned to face the officer and said “don’t touch me” while attempting to avoid the officer’s hands. The officer falls to the ground and then unleashes a verbal tirade while brandishing a taser.
Officer: “Get the **** on the ground, now! Get the **** on the ground, now! You want to ****ing play, get the **** on the ground! I’m telling you now! Get on the ground!”
Vendor: “Don’t touch me.”
Officer: “Get on the ground now. I’m not ****ing playing.”
At which point the vendor goes back to his cart gesturing as though he is going to pack up. The officer asks for backup.
Las Vegas Metro responds to the video involving the street vendor
The video went viral with some questioning the aggression by the Metro officer for what is a misdemeanor. Others are angry that the officer was potentially pushed on the ground by the man.
Metro responded to the incident in a series of tweets (or whatever they are called now). It turns out the officer and the vendor had met the day prior.
“LVMPD is still reviewing the entirety of this incident…the officer had contact with the street vendor the day prior on August 5th. He reminded the vendor that operating without a license is illegal.”
A legal path for street vendors is coming, but not yet.
Important Update Regarding Street Vendors in Clark County.

See attached statement. pic.twitter.com/OWBjJxafbC
The Nevada Legislature passed SB92 in June, but the law doesn’t go into effect until later this year. When officially up and running, Clark County says there will be a path to getting a license. Right now, there is no path and therefore the street vendors are all operating illegally.
