In a new interview with People on Wednesday (October 4), Selena Gomez reflected on how far she has come in the three years after launching her viral makeup brand, Rare Beauty. The 31-year-old singer and actress tells the publication, “It’s unbelievably humbling. You really become outside of yourself when you’re listening to someone else’s story and someone else’s struggles.” The Only Murders In The Building star initially launched the company with the purpose of breaking down beauty standards. She continues that she’s felt less alone working on the company, and now, she hopes that people can get that same access she’s been able to.
Gomez has been open about her struggles with mental health, including a bipolar diagnosis she first shared with fans in 2020. Turning 30 was a “good moment” for her, and now that she’s 31, the “Calm Down” singer says she “actually truly” feels like the older she’s gotten, “the more I’ve really appreciated the struggles that I’ve had.” This doesn’t mean she necessarily feels held back by anything, but now she feels the freedom to be honest with the world and herself. “I’ve called myself out,” she admits to People. “I just want to be the best version of myself.”
Since 2020, one percent of all Rare Beauty sales have been donated to Gomez’s Rare Impact Fund, which is raising $100 million over the next ten years to provide access to mental health services and education for young people around the world. In honor of World Mental Health Day next Tuesday (October 10), Sephora will be donating 100 percent of Rare Beauty product sales to the fund. Gomez shared her gratitude for the beauty retailer for the support of her mental health mission.
Still, Gomez says her confidence comes from within. She tells the publication, “I know it seems easy, but I promise you it’s been years of constant back and forth in my head, and now I’m just really happy, and I guess it’s showing, which I’m really honored.”
