Boyz II Men Singing About Baby Back Ribs Is Amazing
It sounds like Boyz II Men has traded in their Philly Cheese Steaks for Baby Back Ribs.
The Motownphilly singers recently announced they have partnered with Chili’s to sing the restaurant chain’s famous Baby Back Ribs song. The ironic thing about that is that fans all over the world previously thought the Grammy-winning R&B group had already done it back in the late 90’s. Boyz II Men member Wanya Morris told People that they were asked often if the original version was his band. Because it had the group’s signature a’capella sound and perfect harmonies.
It wasn’t Boyz II Men who sang the Chili’s song back then. But it is now. So, it’s like everything is finally right in the universe.
There have been other famous musicians who have sung commercial jingles. But for some reason, this one is going to have staying power. Partially because the song was already attributed to the band. But mostly because the jingle brings us back to the 1990’s and gives us that delicious taste of nostalgia. Anyone who was alive in that decade at least once caught the earworm. And found themselves, almost involuntarily, singing that famous I want my baby back baby back bass line.
In fact, you probably sang it to yourself just now. Sorry not sorry.
It’s a cleverly-written jingle that sticks with you. Even almost 30 years after it was originally written (according to delish.com). And when sung by a band that makes us think of a more carefree era of our lives. When we were belting songs like End Of The Road and On Bended Knee. It’s just a concentrated dose of yesteryear that makes you smile in reminiscence.
And the commercial they did for Chili‘s just makes you love them all over again.
While these guys singing about ribs doesn’t necessarily make us want to go get some, it sure does renew our love for Boyz II Men. Barbecue sauce.
