Las Vegas Summer Heat Record Smashed In 2024
So, how hot was it in sweltering Southern Nevada this summer? Put it this way, the Las Vegas summer heat record book was lit on fire, that’s how bad it was.
For 87 years, the National Weather Service has been keeping a close watch on the meteorological occurrences in the area (along with the rest of the country) and to say that 2024 took the cake was an understatement.
“Meteorological summer” is described as the months of June, July and August (although the season officially began on June 20th and ends on September 22nd). The temperatures were red hot for that three month span.
Look At Some Of The Biggest Las Vegas Summer Heat Record Defeats
There is, of course, the average high temperature. What is the peak temperature we reached each day. The average high for the season was 107.6, which beat the 1940 record by over one degree. How about the Las Vegas summer heat record for the highest low temperature? Beat that one too. 84.8 degrees, which 2.5 degrees warmer than the all time highest low set back in 2018. Not to mention breaking the record for the most days without dipping under 80.
How about just the average temperature!? Not the high, not the low, but the middle. 96.2 degrees which set the Las Vegas summer heat record by, once again, 2.5 degrees. Good God.
The temperatures have been doing a number on the Clark County Coroner’s Office with 181 deaths so far being at least somewhat related to excessive heat exposure. In some cases the heat is the primary cause, in many other cases, it plays a smaller role.
There comes a certain point where the temperature on the sign doesn’t matter anymore. Hot is hot. But it seems like all the big records are being set nowadays… and that’s because they are. Which should be a little bit concerning, no?
