The Nevada Department of Education is asking for your input on a pretty big topic: high school start time. As of now, they start at 7 am. And they are asking if we think they need to start later. Through an online statewide survey, the NDOE is seeking feedback from parents, students, and educators. The survey will stay open until October 4th. They are looking for solutions to tackle different challenges like kids being late or not showing up at all as well as behavior issues.

There’s been a debate for a long time about the ideal high school start time, and both early and later schedules come with benefits, I think. Early start times give the kids a jump on the day, the earlier they start the earlier they get done. That way they can finish school and after-school activities earlier to give them more time in the day for jobs, sports, friends, and family. I also think the early start time aligns with a lot of parents' work schedules too

Early Or Late High School Start Time

On the other hand, later start times have been said by the National Education Association to improve mental and physical health for students. I can see that being true because I know my teen finds it hard to go to bed early most days, so he's tired in the morning and throughout the day. So maybe giving students more time to sleep in later, they won't get so tired by the middle of the day. Maybe they would feel more focused and alert during class to get better grades. Because the math numbers are not looking good in CCSD right now.

The NDOE wants to know how these factors play out in your household or classroom. This is your opportunity to voice what you think would be most beneficial for students across Nevada for the early of late high school start time. Don't miss the chance to participate in this conversation. Submit your feedback here by October 4th.
