Man Treads Water 20 Hours, Kicks Shark After Falling Off Ship
Everyone has heard the story of James Michael Grimes, the man who fell off a Carnival ocean liner and treaded water for 20 hours before being rescued. But one question remains: how many drinks did he have before going overboard?! Last Friday, Grimes appeared on ‘GMA‘ to chat about his harrowing experience in the Gulf of Mexico. While he confesses that he had been drinking the day of the fall, he can’t remember how much he had consumed. All he remembers is downing a few drinks and winning one in an air guitar contest.
Grimes insists that alcohol didn’t play a factor in his fall but the jury is still out. He admitted to drinking during the day and then at night drinking one drink that he won after winning his air guitar contest. He says he doesn’t remember falling off or even hitting the water. James woke up in the water with no ship in sight. He knew then it was fight or flight.
He swears the lord was with him that night because he has a hard time treading water in a pool let alone in the middle of an ocean for 20 hours, in the middle of the night.
Watch James Michael Grimes’ recollection of events on GMA:
EXCLUSIVE: James Michael Grimes said he treaded water for nearly 20 hours after falling overboard overboard on a Carnival cruise ship on Thanksgiving Eve -- battling jelly fish, rip currents and shark-infested waters before being airlifted by the U.S. Coast Guard.

The story of James Michael Grimes is certainly an incredible one; however, there is still one big mystery left unsolved: how many drinks did this dude consume before going overboard?! The only person who knows for sure is Grimes himself—and unfortunately even he doesn’t remember! One thing we do know for sure is that whatever amount of alcohol Grimes did have was not enough to significantly impair his judgment or alter his perceptions, which allowed him to stay afloat for 20 hours until help arrived! As amazing as this tale may be, it serves as a reminder to always be cautious and aware when you’re having fun on vacation–you never know what could happen!
