The New Netflix Crime Documentary Controversy
Netflix just released its latest true crime documentary, “Monsters: The Menendez Brothers”. It revisits the infamous case from the ’90s of Lyle and Erik Menendez, who were convicted of brutally murdering their parents Jose and Kitty Menendez. The brothers made headlines for their claim that their parents abused them, specifically their father. Their defense split public and family opinion at the time. Now Netflix is locking us all back in, shedding new light on their motivations behind the murders. But… Not everyone is happy with the story being told by Netflix.
Erik Menendez, one of the convicted brothers, is outraged by the portrayal of himself and his brother in “Monsters” according to a TMZ article. Erik feels that the show focused too much on the murder and not enough about the abuse they suffered. They maintain the reason for the murders was because of the abuse. That being said that just brings up more debate on if the boys were in fact abused by their father.
As a huge fan of crime and all crime documentary and docuseries, I can’t stop watching the doc. Netflix has proven time and time again that they are so good at creating addictive, well-researched true crime documentaries they suck us all into the mystery of the crimes. For me, it’s the psychology of it all and the aftermath of the real life events.
“Making a Murderer”, and “The Keepers”, just a couple of examples of how Netflix takes the complex stories and breaks them down in a way that we just can’t stop watching.
That being said, true crime shows are tricky to do because of all parties involved. Some people maintain their innocence and you can really push an audience to fight for you or against you in these documentaries or docuseries. There is a fine line between storytelling and exploitation.
If you love to watch a good crime documentary like me, this is a must watch especially if you remember it all happening in real time in the 90s. It’s one of the most notorious family murders and it brings a lot of light to the case.
