Twitter Is Up In Arms Over Disney’s Tinker Bell Casting
On Tuesday, Disney released the trailer for its upcoming live-action remake of Peter Pan & Wendy and it has people talking.
The thing that has everyone up in arms?
Yara Shahidi will be playing Tinker Bell. In classic Twitter form people have gone there to voice their opinions on the matter, with some feeling like Disney’s move is more about image or laziness than it is inclusivity.

Yara Shahidi is an amazing actress who has starred in films like Black-ish, Grown-ish, and The Sun Is Also A Star—and now she can add Tinker Bell to her impressive resume! By casting her as Tinker Bell, Disney is sending an important message about representation and inclusion—namely that characters don’t have to remain exclusively white even if they were originally conceived as such. This could help open up more opportunities for other actors and actresses.
The reason studios make beloved characters black in the live action adaptations is so they don’t have to go to the trouble of actually giving special, brand new unique characters made from scratch to black people.

At the end of the day, it’s hard to deny that having a person of color take on such an iconic role is a positive step for representation in Hollywood; however you feel about this particular casting decision. While some may argue that it would have been better if Disney had simply created a new character rather than changing one already established, we can all agree that having more diversity on screen — both behind and in front of the camera — is something worth celebrating! Whether you’re excited or disappointed by this news, one thing’s for sure: Twitter isn’t letting this debate go anytime soon, as per usual.
So instead of giving poc their own movies or making new movies with poc characters, they decided to just make white characters black for some reason to be like heey we are so accepting we support everyone.. this is so weird, other then princess and the frog there isnt any other

All of that being said I think she looks bomb as Tikner Bell and I’m excited to see her in the role and for the entire movie in general.
