Las Vegas Casino Loses Over $1M To Man Posing As Hotel Owner
Remember back in the day when we all used to play pretend as kids? From doctors to teachers, we’d all play ‘make-believe’ as different various characters and roles, but in the end, it was obvious to those around us that we weren’t actually the roles we were playing. Unfortunately for one Las Vegas casino, they fell for the ‘play pretend’ tricks, resulting in one man, who was posing as the hotel owner, stealing over $1 million dollars from the establishment. Ouch!
According to News 8 Now, the man, Erik Gutierrez, 23, was able to steal the funds by convincing Circa Resort & Casino’s casino cage over the phone that he was the owner of the property, and that funds were needed for fire safety equipment.
News 8 Now shares that the police wrote in court documents that the cage supervisor then transferred the money to Gutierrez, posing as the hotel owner, in four installments at different off-site locations, documents said. “The payments totaled $314,000, $350,000, and $500,000, plus three smaller deposits, resulting in a loss of $1,170,000 to the hotel, documents said.”
Ultimately, police launched their investigation and ultimately arrested Gutierrez at a gym on Sunday, June 18th. News 8 Now reports that the police were able to recover approximately $850,000 of the stolen money, but that as of last week in the writing of his arrest report, they did not know who had the remaining $314,000of the stolen money. If it suspected that a second man that was in the car with Gutierrez would have it, or at least know where it is, but the second individual had not yet been detained.
As for where the case stands now, police documents for the court reveal that Judge Amy Ferreira had set a $25,000 bail for Gutierrez and if he were to be released on bail, he would have to stay away from Circa Resort & Casino and the Fremont Street Experience all together.
