Unwashed Pillowcases Worse Than Toilets
We spend a third of our lives in bed. (Some more than others let’s be honest) But the very place where we get comfort and relaxation can be home to a bunch of bacteria and germs, especially if we don’t wash our pillowcases regularly. Unwashed pillowcases can have up to 17,000 times more bacteria than a toilet seat! That’s terrifying and that should get you jumping out of bed and heading straight to the washing machine where you will wash your sheets and pillowcases every day.
What Makes Unwashed Pillowcases So Unhygienic?
Pillowcases are the perfect breeding ground for germs as they come into direct contact with our faces and hair. Sweat, drool, oils, and dead skin cells accumulate on our pillowcases… disgusting! If we don’t wash our pillowcases regularly, these germs will multiply and lead to skin infections, acne, and cold symptoms.
What Makes Unwashed Pillowcases So Unhygienic?
Ideally, you should wash your pillowcases once a week to keep them free from germs and bacteria. If you’re prone to allergies or suffer from a skin condition, it’s best to wash them even more frequently.
What Can You Do to Keep Your Pillowcases Clean?
Apart from washing your pillowcases regularly, there are a few things you can do to keep them as clean as possible. Avoid sleeping with makeup on as it can transfer onto your pillowcase and clog your pores. Tie your hair up or wear a hair cap at night to prevent oils and dead skin cells from transferring onto your pillow. And change your pillow regularly, ideally every 6-12 months!
The simple act of washing them regularly can do wonders for your skin, respiratory health, and overall wellbeing. So, don’t wait. The next time you go through your list of your chores, add your pillowcases to that list and do it now! Happy sleeping.
