The Top 6 Animation Sequels Of All Time
In 2001, DreamWorks Animation introduced us to a grumpy yet lovable green ogre named Shrek! Everyone loved it so much it became a franchise. The franchise has become one of the staples in the world of animation films. It was so different than any other animation at the time. It was one for the kids but also for the adults. There was adult humor that was far over kid’s heads but parents loved it. They have been doing it for us for over two decades.
After a long time off Shrek and crew are back. The newest Shrek is set to come out in 2026 and we can’t wait!
Sequels Are Always Tough To Do But Some Do It Right
I always get nervous when we go back to the tank for sequels when the original is so good but somehow they do it over and over. These are my top six animated sequels that have managed to capture our hearts and our imaginations.
- Toy Story 3 (2010) – Pixar has a way of emotionally digging into your heart and soul. “Toy Story 3” is no exception. The third Toy Story is about how Woody, Buzz, and the rest of Andy’s toys face the realities of change and what happens when we grow up. It’s devastating but beautiful. I love all of the Toy Story sequels but this one really pulls at our heartstrings. Can’t wait for Toy Story 5!
- How to Train Your Dragon 2 (2014) – DreamWorks Animation struck serious gold with “How To Train Your Dragon” and the sequel somehow was even bigger. The world of Vikings and dragons, breathtaking animations, battles, and deep emotional stakes. Standout sequel, the movie has it all!
- Finding Dory (2016) – I went back and forth with this one. Because “Finding Nemo” is such an amazing movie. I was most nervous when this one came out but Pixar did it. This movie follows Dory, one of the most lovable characters of all time. She goes out to find her long-lost parents much like Nemo was looking for his dad. Sequels are best when they introduce new lovable characters.
- Incredibles 2 (2018) – I was so hype for this movie and it delivered. Fans had to wait 14 years for a sequel but it was worth the wait. It dives into the dynamics of the superfamily as they try to figure out their roles as both hero and everyday people. It’s a great plot and it’s also hysterical. Great job Pixar as per usual!
- Kung Fu Panda 2 (2011) – We are still following the chubby cute adventures of Po. He is the lovable unlikely Dragon Warrior. It dives deeper into his past. It’s emotional and funny just like the first one. I actually think this one is arguably better than the first. But the jury is still out.
6. Inside Out 2 (2024) – I thought that nothing would be better then the writing of Inside Out but Inside Out 2 did it and they did it in such a beautiful way. Pixar made sure that the kids who watched the first Inside Out were represented in the second perfectly. I cried I laughed I learned. Inside Out 2 is AMAZING!
We are so excited for the release of Shrek 5 in 2026. Animated sequels have a way of really hitting home with the entire family, especially these days. The bar is high for Shrek movies but they always seem to deliver.
