CCSD Lawsuits So Plentiful, We Are Having Trouble Keeping Up
It has been a doozy of a past several months with stories of lawsuits against the Clark County School District. Like, really. It feels like there are suits coming from all angles. Bullied kids, beaten teachers, yearbooks showing too much junk and coverups of illegal arrests. So we’ll start with the latter in this list of CCSD lawsuits that, quite honestly, might not cover everything.
Here’s Our List Of The CCSD Lawsuits That We Know About, Starting With The Arrests…
- The Durango High School Arrests – In February 2023, a young man on a public sidewalk was arrested for filming a CCSD Police interaction (a Constitutionally protected activity) when a police officer took issue with that and arrested the filming student. CCSD Police refused to release their bodycam footage of the incident, so the American Civil Liberties Union sued the Clark County School District for not doing so. They won, and the video was released. CCSD was later forced by a judge to pay the ACLU’s lawyer fees. Now the ACLU is set to sue the district again for the incident itself. Two CCSD lawsuits for the price of… three.
- Las Vegas High School Geometry Class Beating – A student at Las Vegas High was beaten to a pulp in February 2022, and her lawyers say the school was indifferent to repeated issues with the assailant, who punched her in the head a dozen times without someone getting involved.
- Down Syndrome Student Beaten At Durango High School – We are at Durango High again, where a federal lawsuit was just filed this week over civil rights violations after a then 17 year old student was beaten and berated by a group of five students.
- CCEA Files Suit Over Former Superintendent’s Tweet – Ah, Jesus Jara. A gem. The former Superintendent accidentally used his real Twitter account – not his burner – to insinuate that the teacher’s union executive director and President were having an affair.
- Middle Schooler With Autism Beaten On A Bus – This is another recent lawsuit over something in 2022. A child with autism, on the school bus from Tarkanian Middle School, was beaten so badly he sustained brain trauma and continues to suffer emotionally and has panic disorders due to it.
- Another Student With Autism Abused At School – This is a lawsuit that was settled for a fat $10,000,000 over teacher Melody Carter severely beating their autistic son at Harley Harmon Elementary School, along with depriving him of food, water and other absolutely horrific things.
- Henderson And North Las Vegas Sues CCSD Over Board Members – Both cities sued after the non-voting members they were granted the ability to add to the CCSD board were stripped of any ability to bring motions to the table. Essentially, lawn ornaments. This will be a fun one to watch.
- Cybersecurity Leak – Hey, remember when CCSD suffered a hack that leaked information on students, teachers and parents? This lawsuit does.
- CCSD Bus Driver Had A Record – Back in October, a CCSD bus driver rear ended a pick up truck driver, causing him injury and the kids in the bus a scare. Now she and the district are being sued. Turns out that CCSD was sued once before for this particular driver, and settled just before the second crash. REALLY? Another two CCSD lawsuits around one bad apple.
- Student Wants Another Year Of High School – Parents took their kid out of school during the COVID times for homeschooling. When they put him back in school, they were expecting a 9th grade curriculum. They put him into 10th. Now they are suing the district to get him one last year in high school that they feel he deserves and needs.
- Teacher Sued Over Tweet Retaliation – A teacher was put under investigation and kept away from the classroom for months after he had some heated political debates with a school board member. The district settled for $150,000.
- Teacher, Nearly Killed, Sues – A teacher at Eldorado High School was beaten within an inch of her life by a student. No one was monitoring the school’s security cameras and she wasn’t found until 90 minutes after the beating began. The student had a record of behavior issues. The whole story is disgusting.
- Grad Sues Over Embarrassing Yearbook Photo – Filed under “just pay it”, a high school grad was incredibly embarrassed after a photo of the student running track showed a “relatively lengthy protuberance” (the judge’s words, not ours) in his pants. Judges found for the student for $6000. But wait… CCSD actually decided to appeal and lost again. “CCSD is a bully,” the student told the RJ.
Honestly, there are probably more CCSD lawsuits, but we already got an A on this article. Get your act together, CCSD.
