6 Groups People Say Act Like A Cult (But In A Fun Way)
When people get really passionate about something, it’s normal for people who don’t share the same passion to raise an eyebrow or compare them to a cult. Of course, most of these comparisons are made to be a joke, but it’s you can’t say that certain groups are giving fierce loyalty and dedication. Let’s take a look at some of these communities that people jokingly… or seriously say act like a cult:
1. CrossFit Enthusiasts
CrossFitters are known for their tight-knit community. They’ll talk about WODs (workouts of the day), PRs (personal records), and their box (gym) at every opportunity they have. And they can only talk like that to each other because nobody else knows what they are talking about. The way they love converting others to CrossFit makes them cult-like.
2. Subaru Owners
Subaru drivers share a love for reliability, all-wheel drive, and adventure and I feel like they all love camping and hiking. What other car brand has stickers like “Subaru Love” and thousands of social media groups? The love they share for the brand makes you feel like if you aren’t in you are definitely out.
3. Peloton Users
If you’ve ever met a Peloton user, you’ve probably heard them rave about their favorite instructors, achievements, or leaderboard battles with strangers. The online Peloton community is one I would like to be in they seem really supportive and encouraging, but to a lot of outsiders, it could feel like a virtual spin-class cult.
4. Disney Adults
Disney isn’t just for kids. Disney adults are people who carry a deep love for Mickey Mouse, princesses, and theme parks into their adult years. They visit the parks regularly, collect exclusive merchandise, and plan Disney-themed weddings. To some, their unwavering devotion feels like its own magical cult.
5. Multi-Level Marketing (MLM) Reps
Whether it’s selling essential oils, leggings, weight loss shakes, or beauty kits, MLM reps are masters of building a sense of community. They all use the buzzwords like “financial freedom” “being your own boss,” and “retire you’re spouse”. Their enthusiasm for recruitment is probably the most cultish if you ask me.
6. Runner Communities
Runners are a unique breed. Who likes to just run? Turns out a lot of people. They’ll wake up at dawn for group runs, and obsess over PRs. Do we see a trend here? A lot of physical activity is like cults. That is why I stay away from physical activity, they will just suck you right in.
Calling these groups “cult-like” is usually more about poking fun at their passion. At the end of the day, these communities bring people together and create connections. And hey, if we’re being honest, we all probably have our own “cult” we’re part of, mine is wine and football.
What’s your “cult”?
