F1 To Las Vegas Venues On Race Route: Pay The Price Or Else
In the casino industry there is a term called “the vig”. It’s the amount you pay the house to take a bet. Well F1 Las Vegas is betting venues selling a “perfect view” of the race will pay up, or they’ll be seeing “F None” instead.
The Daily Mail is reporting that that venues along the race route are being asked to pay $1500 per person for race watching events. Have a balcony on Harmon? $1500 a head. A day club on Las Vegas Boulevard? $1500 a head. Obviously this comes as a surprise to some of the venues along the route, who had the dumb luck of being at the right place at the right time.
F1 Las Vegas can’t tell them they can’t do business… but they can obscure their view of the race. The race is rumored to be threatening obstructions in the sightlines of certain venues along the route. Mon Ami Gabi, you better start charging more for escargot if you want a view.
What F1 Las Vegas is doing isn’t completely unheard of
While it does seem a little petty (and a lot profitable), it’s not unheard of for a sports league to demand their cut. For years, the NFL was going after any bar that was holding Super Bowl parties. Not with a view of the game, just a view of the TV. In recent years it seems like they’ve cooled off as long as you don’t charge admission. But their argument is if it wasn’t for their product, no one would be there that day.
Same goes for F1. If you are going to a restaurant with a view along the Strip, and that restaurant is charging more, F1 wants their cut. Not that it makes it right or wrong. At the end of the day it’s only going to affect the not quite rich schleps that didn’t get prime viewing on the course itself.
Maybe they’ll raise enough money to pay for the race route paving themselves.
