Best Shark Movies For Shark Week
It’s that time of the year again! It’s Shark Week on Discovery Channel. The ocean is taking center stage. I think this is the best time of the year to binge-watch shark movies! And if you take the time to think about it there are so many great shark-themed films.
Shark movies have been around for decades. But we all know the father of shark movies is Steven Spielberg’s 1975 classic “Jaws”. The movie was groundbreaking, suspenseful, and memorable. “Jaws” set the standard for shark thrillers. People writing shark-themed films still draw inspiration from the original Jaws today.
What is it about shark movies that keep us wanting more? Maybe the fear of them. Whatever the reason, shark movies give a nice blend of suspense, horror, and even sometimes a little humor.
Let’s dive into my favorite shark movies.
- Jaws (1975) – Obviously gotta start with this one. A list of shark movies wouldn’t be complete without mentioning where it all started. Timeless classic, unforgettable moments, and iconic lines. “You’re gonna need a bigger boat.” IYKYK
- The Shallows (2016) – Blake Lively stars in this one and I love Blake Lively. I wasn’t sure how I would like her in a thriller but I really love it. Premis? She is stranded only 200 yards from shore with a great white circling her. Human vs. Nature.
- Deep Blue Sea (1999) Action, science fiction, horror, it has it all. Scientists genetically engineer sharks to find a cure for Alzheimer’s disease but the sharks turned against them very SiFi driven which I normally don’t love but this is a good one.
- 47 Meters Down (2017) – Kind of like The Shallows but this time under the water. Two sisters the girls are trapped in a shark cage with limited oxygen and a great white shark circling them. It’s a stressful movie, as all shark movies are.
- Open Water (2003) – This is loosely based on true events. A couple was accidentally left behind by their scuba diving group. Unlock new fear!
Shark Week is such a perfect excuse to sit on the couch and boost your anxiety by watching all of the best (sometimes cheesy) shark movies there are. There are some new streaming shows to check out this year too!
