Choo Choo! Las Vegas To SoCal Train Getting Billions
As we’ve told you before, the planned train route between Las Vegas and Southern California (Rancho Cucamonga to be exact) is coming. Sure, we’ve heard it before. But ever since Brightline took over the project, things have been moving full steam ahead. Now new funding from the federal government is expected to bring a big boost to the project.
The United States Department of Transportation gave the greenlight to allocate $3 billion in grant money towards the project. The entirely of the Brightline West project is expected come up to $12 billion. The money is coming from a massive “Bipartisan Infrastructure Law” that promises up to $108 billion towards public transportation projects.
What will the Vegas to California train route look like?
Travelers will be able to go from Las Vegas to Rancho Cucamonga at speeds nearing 190 miles an hour. You would be able to board at Las Vegas Boulevard and Blue Diamond Road (next to the planned Oak View arena project).
There will be stops in between, ending just past the Cajon Pass. From there, travelers would be able to transfer to the existing Metrolink regional rail system which could bring you straight into Los Angeles.
Some are slightly skeptical of the route. It is sure to shave time off the driving trip but would still be slower than a flight. But imagine getting to take the train into LA to catch a concert, and take a snooze on the trip back. No paying for parking. No Uber from the airport. Not to mention the ease it will bring people traveling from Southern California to Las Vegas.
Brightline already has a successful rail system operating in Florida and it seems like it is actually going to happen, unlike the project in the past which seemed like more of a pipe dream.
President Biden is expected in Las Vegas on Friday to officially announce the funding. The project is expected to be serving passengers in 2028.
