How To Help Get Your Child A D1 Scholarship
If you have a student-athlete, you are confident they have the talent to go to the next level, and you are looking to get your child a D1 scholarship there are new things that you need to learn. High school sports have evolved significantly over the years and in turn, so has getting your child a D1 scholarship.
The process used to be primarily centered around on-field performance, and while that is still important – the process has transformed into strategic planning, networking, and all-around academic excellence. As the times have changed and if your child plays at a very competitive level you need to know certain things to give them the upper hand going into high school to get your child a D1 scholarship.
Here is a little bit of insight and things my husband and I have learned from parents who have been through the process recently, coaches who our son has worked with and the owner of Phase 1 Elite Sports, Mike Waters, who knows the ins and outs of sports marketing, NIL (name, image, likeness) and recruiting. (More on how he can help you at a FREE workshop below)
- The rise of club teams, showcases, scouting services and competition has made getting your child a D1 scholarship competition more fierce than ever.
- Back in the day if you were really that good then your academics didn’t come into play but now they most definitely come into play more than you think. Colleges and Universities have a HUGE pool of talented athletes to pick from so if you are as fast as one person but they have better grades, you can bet they will give the money to the person with the higher GPA.
- Love or hate social media your online presence makes a difference. It’s a powerful tool for athletes to showcase their skills and personality to college coaches and recruiters. That works both ways remember!!! Social media can make or break you. If you act like a fool online they will hold that against you. Think before you post.
- The recruitment process begins far earlier than it used to. You used to start getting letters at the end of 11th grade and mostly your senior year. But now kids are getting offers as early as freshman or sophomore year of high school. So you need to have your game plan ready in advance.
