Aces Coach Becky Hammon Inducted Into Basketball Hall Of Fame
You’ll often hear qualifiers when it comes to WNBA stars. Best woman to play. The champion of women’s basketball. But when it comes to knowing the game, there are no qualifiers. World Champion Las Vegas Aces coach Becky Hammon knows basketball, and now we know she’s in the Basketball Hall Of Fame. All of basketball.
At an event on Saturday at the Naismith Basketball Hall Of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts, Becky Hammon was honored alongside legends like Dwyane Wade, Pau Gasol and Dirk Nowitzki. She was inducted by fellow female basketball hall of famers Sheryl Swoopes and Teresa Weatherspoon.
Becky Hammon: a star on the sidelines and on the court
Becky Hammon’s career goes far beyond being the coach for the Las Vegas Aces. She got her professional start in 1999 as a member of the New York Liberty. Her playing career continued through to the San Antonio Stars (who would later become the Aces) through 2014.
A 15 year career is nothing to sneeze at, especially considering being a six time WNBA all star and having her number retired for the Stars/Aces. But that wasn’t enough for Becky.
When it comes to knowing X’s and O’s, there is no difference in the sexes. The game is the game. So Becky pivoted to the sidelines in the 2014-15 season as the second female assistant coach in NBA history for the San Antonio Spurs. She continued there until 2022 where she became the head coach of the Las Vegas Aces.
Her talent with the clipboard is undeniable. So much so, rumor has it she’s in the running to become the next coach of the NBA’s Toronto Raptors. That would make her not only the first female NBA head coach, but the first female head coach of a major professional men’s sports team in North America.
If anyone can knock down that glass ceiling, it’s Becky. Congrats, woman!
Okay, who's cutting the onions? 🥺
